Writing and Editing
Candace Goforth

Candace Goforth is a senior-level writer and editor with 14 years experience in the journalism field.  As a business reporter for the Akron Beacon Journal, she established a reputation for spotting trends and writing about them in a sophisticated way. She currently contributes to national and regional publications.

Candace is known for her ability to digest complicated topics and explain them in accessible, clear language. She moves easily between direct, expository writing and an entertaining, conversational voice; and she understands when each is appropriate.

In 2001, the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism selected her as a Knight Fellow in Workplace Journalism, an honor she earned on the merits of her writing for the Akron Beacon Journal. Her column on workplace culture and etiquette, Polite Company, was one of the first regular daily newspaper features to address the topic in an engaging, edgy way. The style of writing and the subject matter – from organizing labor unions to the communal workplace refrigerator – drew a loyal reader following. The columns also were popular offerings on the Knight Ridder news service, and regularly were picked up by other major daily newspapers.

Candace came to the Akron Beacon Journal from Cleveland Magazine, where she served as associate editor. In that role, she managed the work of freelance writers, shepherding feature stories and cover packages from idea stage to publication. In 1998, she won a Cleveland Press Club Ohio Excellence in Journalism Award for managing and editing the magazine’s 25th anniversary issue.

Prior to joining Cleveland Magazine, Candace was a metro news reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer, where she covered higher education and wrote news features.

Through her consulting practice, Candace writes and edits on a contract basis for a diverse mix of clients, including national magazines, web-based journals and regional publications. She also makes her media-experience available to corporate clients, who seek her communications expertise with press releases, speech writing and other writing and editing projects.

Candace is a 1994 graduate of Kent State University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
